So, I did something amazingly brilliantly stupid. I was putting BARD books onto one of my SD cards and suddenly, before I even knew what had happened, I deleted my entire downloads folder. I don't even know how I did it! (a) Any way to recover it? And (b) how the hell do I create a new downloads file? I have a Mac with Windows 7 on one side of my system. I also use WindowEyes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.-John
Oh my fucking god!!!... ... it happens I've done things like that two..I think that
you can back up on a mac, but I wouldn't know how you do it. Kind of like with
windows where you go to some setting and you choose the time you wish to
back up your system. Don't quote me on it I honestly don't remember. I hope
you recoup all your stuff.
I know it's called time machine; don't know how to do it. Google how to backup your mac using time machine.
Not sure if you will be able to recover what you deleted, though. I don't think so.
Did you delete it from the mac side, or the windows side? If the mac, go in to trash and see if it was moved there and restore it. If from the windows side, do likewise, and check the recycle bin, and if it's there restore it.
Right. Shouldn't be gone forever, yet. Smile.
It happens.
I think I'll try a restore, but not now. My head hurts. But thanks, folkses. Any more input is gratefully appreciated.
A quick update. As it turned out, I did restore my system to 6/8/14, and the downloads folder was restored. Even restored the software that was originally there. All my books I recently downloaded are gone, but boo-hoo. I'll deal. Anyway, thanks again again.
Just interested if you looked in the recycle bin first or the Apple side?
Good for you. Now, don't touch that delet key until you're ready. Smile.
My stuff was on the Windows side. I looked in the recycle bin and none of the stuff was there. It was a matter of somehow deleting an entire folder. Ouchie!~
In win7 isn't there a "previous version" feature?
Don't know anything about it, but maybe it would be worthinvestigating.
Bob
Sure, but that is only if it is a program you are looking for, and that program is on your computer. If it is not there the previous version won't work.
The next thing, is he's on a Mac, so depending on his Windows setup.
He deleted a file, so if not in the recycle bin, he had to backup as he's done.
Now, he has to remember not to repeat his arror. Smile.
If only I could figure out which error not to repeat!!!
Yair. Hard indeed.
why hasn't anybody not panicked and told this guy that he need not worry.
from within the BARD main page, there is something called downloads or recent downloads. guess where every book you ever downloaded is at?
yep. right there.
smile
That's good to know John, but don't you still have to download them again?
Well, John, you've got people like me who are neat freaks. I clean my history and such things monthly.
If I do a lot of downloading and changing programs or updating, I clean up after I'm finished as well.
So, if I go to my IE downloads, or even my download folder, I've probably deleted it.
In this case he deleted a file, so he was lost in that area. He did the best thing.
no, he didn't.. smile.
yes he'd have to download the books again but here's what you do.
1. log intoBARD
2. go to the heading/link that says "My Previous Downloads" and hit enter to open the My Previous Downloads page.
3. from that page, download any books you have downloaded before.
4. enjoy.
It looks like the books are listed in descending order from date of download, so at least you don't have to sort through all the books to find the most recent ones.
Um, but it wasn't just a Bard thing. I deleted the downloads folder from my computer and couldn't access the downloads from desktop anymore. So, yes, I did the best thing because it wasn't strictly a Bard issue. I mean, I deleted the downloads folder while copying books, but the point was I lost the folder; I actually didn't care so much about the Bard downloads because I already knew I'd get those books back. Which I did. What I panicked about was thinking I'd lost some software as well as files, which when I did the restore, I ended up getting that back. Sorry; should've clarified.
oh! yes that explains much better what happened.
yes you did do the best thing in that case.
